How we rate the games?
The wolf among us is a story telling game where you make choices and the end result will depend upon you. It has a cool graphics effect and most of storytelling games have it, so it is not a new idea in the gaming industry. The game itself was creating by the walking dead authors and uses the same graphics. The game itself is based on the story and not on the gameplay which is somewhat awkward as a genre and it would hardly be a game simply because 70-80% of the game is just a story. To tell the truth I personally greatly enjoyed the story, but this is just a personal opinion since a lot of people buy a game to play not to watch it.
The graphics of the game were ok, not impressive nor bad. It greatly depends on the players choices so I would leave this in a 50-50 to the choice of the players. A lot hate this style, others love it so it falls down to personal judgement. As for the cinematics, it was obvious that the players eyebrows sometimes moved without any human sense and the shadows were casted after some objects, for example if you stay after a door it will cast the whole shadow on the ground, not on the door. This is weird and it is quite clear that the developers didn't intend to make any great show-offs when it came to graphics. Even though it is mostly about the story, it doesn't mean that the graphics won't matter, actually they will greatly impact the game. Since it is an easy OpenGL trick (I have studied this trick myslef so it is fearly easy in programming) I wouldn't bet that those graphics are amazing or some hot skills, but it looks exactly as a magazine so it does the intended job very good.
Gameplay was 20-30% apparent in the game and it wasn't a big deal. You just select your preferred response, reply to an action and move around to find clues. It was very easy too, which comes down to a very easy game and you would never loose, no matter what you choose. This is simply ridiculous and I wouldn't agree with someone who tries to justify the game as a story telling genre. While you would enjoy the game, the most stupid thing is to find the head of the people you have met before, which is way too stupid, you could have at least see the whole body, not leave it like that and show it to kids who will play the game, absolutely offensive for others. I found it creepy and it just made the game releave a bad taste. Also the total game would hardly be 5-6 hours for the first episode. This is might be some kind of a scam compared to other games which actually have much more gameplay than that. Also the game has violence since the start.
The optimization seems quite good, but to tell the truth what is there so difficult to optimize when there is no need for advanced graphics to a story telling game? So actually, even though it worked perfect, with barely any graphics bugs, the difficulty setting is very low so I am myself not impressed at all. The game loaded very quick, responded to controls perfectly, key controls were as they should be and that is it. One thing I didn't like though were the episodes which were split from first to the fifth, making the game lack 4 of the episodes without any real reason. Why should people pay to get the episodes when the game itself was barely 5-6 hours? There should have been all the episodes in only one game.
The idea was amazing. Only problem was that the story, even though really creative, always ruined everything with cutted heads thrown down stairs which is stupid, they could have left the whole body. Even if there was a reason that the body was not there, because there was a moment where the wolf says that he might have already seen these people, creating some suspicion that the characters might have lived before and resurected again. So it might seem weird that you see some strange animals, right? Well it is part of the game where each of the characters originate from fables, so actually this is a link between the fables we have seen before, like snow white, beauty and the beast which makes the so called story telling a mix of ideas, not unique, thus lowering the idea rating.
It might even be a link between people from real life and those fables, thus making this game somewhat suspicious and why they showed heads left in that manner. That is really not cool and I personally think it was made on purpose, which doesn't justify for whatever reason. The game though was not boring, on the contrary, it made me play it from start to end and I enjoyed every piece of its story. It truly depends though on what do you want to play. The nice thing is that you can choose whatever answer and it would affect your final result in the game.
Overall the game was good, but no big deal in the graphics, optimization and gameplay. Furthermore the game itself originates from existing fables which makes it not unique. You even have to pay for episodes, which is not really cool for a 5-6 hour game.
