How we rate the games?
Terraria a 2D side-scrolling classic action-adventure/RPG indie Sandbox game. If you've played Minecraft, this game is very similar, but also differs in many ways. There is alot more exploration, crafting and role-playing. Basically you start off by creating your character, but its process is very limited, allowing you to change only the gender, hairstyle and the color of your hair and clothing. That is prety acceptable for a 2D side-scrolling classic game. Than you can generate worlds, play in it and save them. Every generated world is randomly generated with different monsters and environment. Allowing you to have a varied gameplay experience.
The game mostly focuses on resource gathering and exploration, Maps are very large even on the smallest size setting and there is alot to explore, Oceans, Forests, Plains, Desert, Mountains, Caves, Dungeons, Underworld, you name it. You can also completely alter the terrain of the map through the use of tools such as the Pickaxes, Hammers and Bombs. There are alot of resources to mine, examples are Wood, Iron, Copper, Silver, and Gold to craft things in the game. each having their own sets of different items "tiers", with every tier having different stats and properties.
There are different types of Mobs in the game, most are harmful like the zombies, slimes, worms, etc. and much like an RPG game, there are also Powerful Bosses in the game to defeat, that will grant you new perks and bonuses. At night, more dangerous creatures will spawn and they will consistently attack everything and everyone, especially Player Characters. Not everyone is an enemy though, along the adventure you may stumble upon some NPCs or they might even come to you, and they provide additional benefits to the player. There are also lootable items in the game, from monster drops to hidden chests. which can consumed or used to craft even more items!
Another big part of the game is the Crafting, it allows you to create lots of things, from simple furniture, to weapons, body gear and armors, to making potions, which is more like Alchemy. Almost every object in the game can be crafted, and believe me when I tell you this, There are alot of objects in this game, A lot of it. To craft specific items you need the proper "ingredients" and the right crafting station, for example to acquire a door, you would need to chop down trees first to get wood, then use a Workbench to craft it.
The combat system is not that good, just your Typical 2D hack and slash game, Click and click and click to win! Even though there's alot of items and weapons in the game, like Swords, Guns, Bows and Staff(Yes you can do magic!), the Combat system feels lacking and it needs improvement. There are three character difficulties: Softcore, Mediumcore, and Hardcore. In Softcore, characters drop half of their coins, Mediumcore, drops all items and coins. while in Hardcore, characters die permanently together with all their items and coins, and the Character is deleted after.
Playing the game with other people triples the fun, It will really feel like an RPG game, where you are not a only one affecting the world, you can trade with other players, craft, build, mine, fight with them, go on a group adventure and exploration, Defeat bosses together, Battle it out of PVP and more!, Pretty much everything you can do in Singleplayer. only with friends this time!
If you love spectacular graphics in games, you will not be impressed by Terraria, however if you are looking for a solid gameplay with lots of hours to spend and you love Sandbox RPG games, Go play Terraria! At first you will be overwhelmed by the lack of tutorial vs lots of things to do, but get past these things and comes a beautiful game. Sadly to say the game has seen its last major update at version 1.1.2. and there would be no more extra content coming.
