The Sims 3 has a great history behind it. I remember my friends talking about that family life, taking your children to school, getting a job, buying items like a computer for your home and other sweet stuff you would ever imagine thinking about your life in a virtual world. You can even customize your characters to the one you really want.
The game has a very good reputation from its old series, but this game is the third of the franchise. Its developers are well-known for adding new expansion packs so don't think that this game is all. Unfortunately, adding expansion packs makes the game optimization much worse, especially adding more than 10 expansion, which is quite ridiculous and they cost a lot, some of them much more than the game itself! I personally don't like this, because it is just a way not to make a new game and adding new stuff over the first game.
Graphics are good, but AMD graphic cards are known to have issues with anti-aliasing because of the Catalyst options. To remove this problem with the trees, you will have to disable anti-aliasing. After that, you can simply go on with the game, as there will be no problems at all. Apart from this, you will get a tremendous bug, known to slow down the game, if you have maybe all or parts of the DLC of this game and you will need to have all DLC the developers have released before in order to make sure everything will work right. This means that you cannot play a DLC you want, unless you buy all preceding games before.
The idea of the game is to create a family and give birth to kids, marry and so on. What this series is notorious on, is that girls usually are attracted by it, so you can gift it to your girlfriend or your little girl. I personally like the game too, especially when the burglar gets caught. During the game, you will have a lot of careers, like joining the police, sports, medicine and much more stuff like surprises, adding you more money, or getting your character fired from the job. It is a matter of luck too, so you won't always have same stuff happen.
There is a day and night system, making you sleep and replenish your energy. I didn't like the time you had to wait for your sim to sleep and it would have been wiser if all of them are sleeping, by pressing a single button and passing the time immediately. Even though burglaries will happen usually during night, your sim can get up and phone the police. They will pay you money because they caught the burglar and give you half the money of the items stolen.
Optimization is quite good, with some exceptions. I didn't find any real problem during the making of the video, except that I had to remove anti-aliasing from that AMD GPU problem. One more thing I mentioned before, was the DLC thing which slowed the game down, making it unplayable. This is not a good thing and I think they should make a new The Sims because with the same graphics of 2009 and playing it for so many years it is really getting boring.
Overall the game is good as a gameplay and idea, but graphics, optimization where not really good. Even if you have a powerful CPU, it won't help with the slow down thing, since no real fix has been found. I have tried some of the fixes around, but they worked for new game, or making some changes where you would have to reset your sim in every 5 minutes, which is absolutely boring.

I have played The Sims 3 so many times and I could say that it is my favorite PC game. I agree with your review, the idea is unique, but the graphics are not so good. However, I wouldn't rate it 7/10, because I believe that the gameplay and the idea are more important than the optimisation and the graphics. Anyway, personally, I would rate it: 8,5/10. I enjoy choosing a job. The best one is being thief or police officer. It's very funny when you notice a thief who is breaking into your house. My character is named Panos, he is blonde, not fat and he works as a Police Officer.

I love this game, and its my favourite pc game to play. I would have to agree with Mr. Panos that the game play and the idea are more important than the optimisation and the graphics, but I think the graphics are really good anyway. My favourite thing to do with my character is try and reach the highest level in the jobs, I love the police the best as well, and I love how there are two different paths in the police to progress.

I think the expansions add some spice to your game, but eventually you will grow out of the game. I also agree that the expansions, extra articles. etc are really overpriced. Considering the expansions for the Sims 2, we had to wait a lot for Seasons and University. I really would like the next Sims to have most of the current expansions already implemented, specially for optimization reasons. it is ridiculous how many expansions they can come up with.
I like lazyGamer reviews on the game expansions and things, it is great so you don't spend you money on disappointments. I really laughed out loud with Dragon valley and their baby dragons. Xb
I think buying the generations with your base is a good start to spice up your game. I also like pets and seasons. The rest is open to whatever tickles your fancy. Supernatural or Late Night may not be for everyone. Still, it is nice they give you control over some options so for example you can choose not to have other fantasia races.
