How we rate the games?
Retro city rampage is an awesome game. Remember the good ol' GTA 1 and 2 on PSX? This is a very good replica and I think that the game has much more gameplay that GTA itself. The programmer who made it, wanted to return back to the old days by programming it for a Nintendo chip. If the game was created on 1990, it would be an instant success. What amazed me mostly, was the optimization of the game which was perfect. For such little possibilities, the creator tried to minimize the Ram usage and even cutting a lot of tile maps, by duplicating them.
The gameplay is great and it is very close to GTA 2. You can walk around the city, steal vehicles, kill people, fire guns with the police at your back and much more. You can even use a baseball bat to attack strangers and get their money. During the missions, you get to use granades or steal banks. Interesting enough, you can actually use bicycle, which wasn't possible on GTA 2. For some firepower, you can even use tanks and get rid of all pedestrians. There are also the missions which give you the possibility to become rich and unlock extra content. The game gives the idea of the old days of Nintendo, by its colors, music and much more.
The optimization of the game is maybe the best ever seen before. The game is almost perfect with the exception of some vehicles flickering on the screen which wasn't the programmers fault, as stated on a video. Can you even imagine to create so much stuff to run on a 1.78mhz 8-bit CPU? As the programmer mentioned, the game gives the maximum capabilities which were possible in the late 80. To give you a better idea on how it worked, have fun by watching the game's commentary by its creator.
The graphics are not a great deal. With this I mean that what you get, is not the actual quality you get for the latest games. This doesn't mean that you might not enjoy the game only because of the graphics, but you won't see any quality at all, since the game is not even 3D. You can give your own opinion on the graphics, but mind though that none likes to make the graphics worse than it is actually possible.
If you have any nostalgia from Nintendo 9999, you better buy this game since you will find out that even the music is very cool and it was programmed with the lowest possibilities. It all depends on your choice though, so I won't actually be mean with that.
The storyline is about gangstars, just like GTA is. It is exactly the same idea, so you won't be very happy with it, if you don't like GTA. Also, I didn't like the price at all. A staggering 15$ for this kind of game is nonsense, since you can actually get Tomb Raider 1,2,3,4,5 for only 5$ and that is an amazing price. No matter how much effort the programmer put on this game, it is not really logical for such a price, where you could simply buy the old GTA series for cheaper. (If you can actually find any)
Overall the game was great, but the point where it really sucked was the price. If you really like this kind of game, please revise before buying. Enjoy!
