How we rate the games?
Overlord II is a game based on the Overlord series. I have never played this game before, but it didn't make any surprise. It is literally being an Overlord during the entire game, but it might be boring with lots of controls. I personally, didn't like this game and it didn't give any new gameplay, except of using minions to your back.
It started as being one little guy who was being chased by some little kids, taunting you all the time and attacking with snowballs. Than you find minions and use them, than cloth them with the kids costumes and move your way inside the city. This is ok I guess, but not a great thing. You could even use magic, smash objects, command your minions and other stuff like that.
The game was not that great, I was expecting more, especially from the logo where I see someone who has a sword and looks like a mythological being. Even though you get to play with him at the second level, it was not really cool because it seemed like the game was for little babies, only because of the movements and motions of the players, not to mention the little minions who acted like little babies and being servants of the lord. You are simply a commander of a troop, which basically means that the developers tried to mix strategy with third person shooter. It didn't come out very great, but I think the game had to be more serious and some options like upgrades so you could be more powerful and you could have an aura, but you get it that your imagination could go everywhere.
If you talk about the graphics, I didn't see anything special, but I don't expect it that they could be anything greater than the latest games, because of the time this game was released, so you won't be able to see any candy about the graphics. The optimization was very good though and I think that this is more important in this kind of strategy game to third person game, than the graphics. The idea is that they tried to do too much, which was partially perfect with the lack of other very important stuff.
Being the second of the series, means that the first one could have been successful enough to make another one. The game might be appreciated by people who like new genre types or try to play something new. Either way, this game is not for me if you want my personal opinion. The idea of doing too much and not earning anything or buying and selling at least, is not for me. I liked though some partially difficult scenes where you had to use a little of your brains.
The minions might be helpful at times, but they just may become too much and make the whole screen fully blown by attacks. You can command them to come back one at a time or the whole horde you are commanding. Sending them to battle is easy and making them return back is alright, but there was too much of complex fight.
Overall the game was so-so, didn't see things I was expecting especially from CodeMasters, which are the makers of Dirt 3, a game I will review soon enough. I liked the idea that this game was unique, but I can't suggest it to anyone since the genre and gameplay was very difficult to identify the player type.
