How we rate the games?
Hotline Miami is a game based on top-view movements. It certainly reminds of Shadowrun or GTA 2. You are a guy who is going to kill a lot of criminals with numerous weapons. You will wear a mask, of your choice and have special skills from wearing one. Unlocking, is a good thing the game has. You can unlock masks, weapons and chapters.
The more weapons and masks you unlock, the easier the chapters will be. Progressing in the game, basically means that it will become more difficult, but it depends. I personally think that this game is about your personal skill, since you have a weapon and can move around the rooms and kill the enemies. If you are not fast enough, they will normally kill you, but you can trick them so they come to you and than beat them up. A single chapter in the game, is based on one or more stages and after completing all stages, you can go back to your car, or motor-cycle and go on with the next one.
Completing the stage, means that you will have to kill all the enemies, but this won't be always true, since there was a stage where the police came in and you had to go back without getting killed. You will certainly get killed if you play it for the first time, so don't think you will complete the game in no time. It took me about some hours to complete, not because it was easy, but because it had 17 chapters. The better you complete a chapter, the better your grade at the end will be. You can unlock masks by completing the chapters and use them in the next one at the beginning. The problem with this game, is that it only these features:
beat all enemies up, unlock weapons, masks, chapters and you are done.
Compared to the old GTA 2 or Shadowrun, I would certainly recommend these 2, since they have much more stuff in the game and even though they are old, the graphics with Hotline Miami are nearly the same. This means that, this game has no graphics at all, but I certainly won't recommend you judging this game by the graphics. The gameplay is really fun and you can become more skilled the more you will play. That is the most important point of this game, becoming skilled and cunning so you trick your enemies and kill them all. It is no easy task, since there will be a lot of enemies on each stage and they will become sometimes overwhelming. Achieving A+ at the end of the chapter is difficult, since you will have to kill the enemies very fast in order to complete the stage without getting killed. Of course, you don't have to be afraid of loosing your life, since that is quite normal to try the same stage a lot of times.
The game music and lightning effects, might irritate you, especially if you have any disease or medical problems with eyes or ears. The music is sometimes nice to hear though, so it won't always be bad. The game is good enough to be played with your friends and show your skills or average time of completing each chapter. You won't be using very logic, or have any difficulties passing each chapter, it is just a meter of skill which will grow the more you will play. This is the most important thing in the gameplay since you won't be seeing anything else. Talking about the story, you will remember your days when you met some strangers, but you certainly have forgotten them because of your problem. You will play as another character too, which will use the motor-bike when he completes a mission. You will play as this character, by the latest chapters, so don't expect any motor-bikes in early stages.
Talking about weapons, you will have a lot of them. First, there are your melee weapons which won't be heard by the players, which I like to name as silent weapons. They won't be always melee, but you will have to unlock them, like the brick. Second, there are guns and shotguns, which are very powerful and can kill a lot of enemies, but they have their own downside. Shooting even a single time with them, will alert other enemies and they will come to kill you at the place you shot. You can hide though, so they wont be looking for you anymore. You can use a gun to draw attention too, if you get bored going after your enemies or want to trick them in your own trap. The more weapons you unlock, the more powerful they will be. If you ask me, I personally like melee weapons since they won't make any noise and you can kill enemies fast enough. The more variety of firearms you use, the better your score at the end will be, so you better use a lot of them.
When it comes to masks, there will be a lot of them and you will certainly like them. Masks will give you special abilities, like walking faster, starting the stage with a knife, looking further, avoiding dogs, but you can use only a mask at a time, which means that you cannot have more than one ability. Each mask, is a unique animal which is very interesting as a feature and idea. My preferred choice is Don Juan, which is the horse, only because of the lethal doors ability, which means that smacking doors to your enemies will instantly kill them. I forgot to mention that each mask, has a unique name too, so you can identify them easier. You might not like games where you kill people, but this might be worth a try.
Last thing I will cover, but not least, are the game's bugs or in a more understanding way for those who don't know, are problems or errors which are not optimized well in a game. The game shows up a window, which is your choice to terminate the 'program' which is the game itself, or ignoring this problem. To terminate a program, simply means to close the game, but you will normally want to go on so just click ignore and nothing bad will happen. I found out that the pavements in the game, might not show up in rare occasions after clicking ignore, or a part of the pavement. When it comes to gameplay bugs, which are sometimes bad and others are good, this time they might be good. When you are standing exactly where an enemy is, if he has a gun at hand, he won't kill you. This happens for you too, so don't think that the game is always on your side. The doors sometimes won't kill or smash enemies, but this is a very rare occasion which happens because of bad pixel detection. I think that the bugs I explained and found, are not that bad to make you not buy the game, so don't get discouraged by them.
