How we rate the games?
Evoland is an indie game with a fantastic idea and quite obvious cool graphics. At first I was shocked when I saw one of the worst graphics I have ever seen. This changed in quite a bit when unlocking chests and fighting your way through the story. You can actually upgrade graphics, music, user interface and much more by opening chests, amazing isn't it?
Playing Evoland will bring you in a boring place at first, without any weapons, music, squared movement and other ugly, very old stuff. By unlocking the chests, you will not find only keys, but also upgrade the game itself. This is really amazing as an idea and I have barely seen it on an internet game. The game changed dramatically when you go into the third dimension and find out cool graphic effects, which were created year by year from professional programmers. Playing Evoland, you actually learn what was added on game programming and graphics after some time into the video game industry and this is quite interesting.
The graphics evolved and the player itself is going to upgrade them by opening treasure chests. At first there was no animation when opening chests, but you will find a chest which gives animation when opening other ones. This is real fun and makes you want to find as many chests as possible. Not all chests upgrade the game though. There are some secret cards and stars in the game which are collectible items and there are keys in the game which will unlock doors.
Optimization was tremendous. Creating a game from 2D than switching to 2.5D and 3D later, is an amazing amount of work by its developers. Not mentioning other animations, movement, user interface, pixel detection which clearly make this game a winner. Unfortunately, I walked through a chest in the game outside the cave during the gameplay and it embarrassed me by not opening. This is no big deal though as the chest actually opened after moving around it removing the embarrassment! The game didn't have though any different difficulties when starting the game, which is an obvious minus for optimization.
Gameplay was fun, I really enjoyed it. It was clear that the game had a lot of potential and added a lot of stuff into its possibilities, like Final Fantasy gameplay. You can attack, defend, use magic, potions and much more against your enemies. You can even make a bigger party by finding new members during the game. There are a lot of different enemies which also get more detail when you open more chests, especially when you switch to 3D with high-res textures. To say the truth I felt like desperate when I started the game, but when I saw the screen changing graphics I was simple amazed, because that really tickled imagination. After changing graphics, you get to see a lot of fantastic features the game has. During the gameplay, you get to defeat even bosses which are quite powerful, but if you get the hang of it, you will see that they are easy stuff. You also had to use your brains sometimes to unlock or find secret areas or keys, hidden somewhere. You can go to ins and sleep, or find a shop and upgrade your weapons and armor. You can even buy rare cards, but they cost a lot more than equipment. I didn't complete all the game, but would be very interested to, so I could have a chance to tell you what were the upgrades the game had. There are also bad upgrades, which will make enemies appear!
The sound was pretty interesting, you could upgrade it. As the developers wrote on the game, cities music is somewhat dull and boring, but you can hear different and better sounds if you find and open all chests possible.
Overall the game was very cool and unique. We had to give this game a great score, because it really deserves it! You can find it for quite cheap compared to other A++ games and if you ask me, it is really worth it. Good luck!
