How we rate the games?
Company of Heroes is a real time strategy game or known as RTS for short. The gameplay didn't have a great change from the last one and to say the truth, even graphics and the overall game itself felt so Company of Heroes 1, but more on this in the next paragraph!
When I started for the first time the game, the user interface looked very good, with some flashy effects. The game starts by choosing which mode you want to play first and you also have the possibility to play online. The campaign and skirmish are two modes which actually existed in the last one too and I didn't see anything new for the time I played. If you have played the last one, simply don't waste your money on this new one even though it might look like a great game. The graphics were not a big deal, since there wasn't any lightning effects and what is even worse I saw the same UI for some items as the last one, which basically means that the developers were too lazy to work it out. Some would say that if this stuff got changed than we wouldn't understand the game as well as the last one, but none was waiting for the exact same stuff.
What is even worse, CoH 2 had same tanks as the old one and same soldiers. This leaves me no wonder, but to suggest the game only to those who are new to CoH and those who really loved the first one. Even I saw some lagging with my 6770HD which is a decent graphics card, the game ran pretty well. Bear in mind that my resolution is 1920x1080 so you would see better performance if you have lower resolution with the same card.
When it comes to gameplay, the game is fun and I wouldn't argue a lot only because it was the same. The game is about move your troops in real time and so does your enemy too, unless you are not playing skirmish. Selecting your troops is pretty easy, just like all strategy games, by pressing the left-mouse button than sliding the mouse to form a square and all the troops who where within the square will be selected. You have your own troops, engineers, tanks, but you won't have them all in the beginning of your game. I am talking only about skirmish mode now. To be clear, skirmish is where you can start a new game and you can choose resources, AI difficulty and all kind of stuff you desire. You will start a battle against the computer or your friends.
Depending if you are playing a death match, you will win if you defeat your enemy. You can build your buildings by sending engineers to build them and than start producing troops. You would have to create troops and tanks to defend your base. There are snipers and additional new soldiers. Even though it has scored high from metacritics, I doubt if they have already played the first one and have rated in base of what they were waiting for and it was actually the last CoH with some additional graphics.
The story in CoH campaign is not a fiction, it is actually taken from World War history between russians and germans. I am not surprised at all, since it is obvious such kind of games always have used stories of real life and the world wars to show off their game. It is quite useful if you really think about it, because you wouldn't have to recreate a fictional story where people would struggle to understand and the success was not guaranteed.
To finalize, if you have already played CoH 1 and really want to play the second, it is actually the same thing and don't waste your money. This one is as good as the old one was, because there is no big change in the game and it is normal that the game wouldn't change at all since the game are being so commercialized. What really hurts, is that the developers had quite a lot of time to develop the game and the result is just a somewhat better replication of the old game.
Overall the game has good graphics, same gameplay and remember that it is a Real Time Strategy game so you don't have time to think what you would do because the enemy will attack no matter if you are standing still or not!
