How we rate the games?
Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor is a strategy game based on the Company of Heroes franchise. The game seems very well optimized, with good graphics, but I didn't understand why it would show a black distance from the screen, making it look like a lower resolution than it really is. The idea is quite clear, since most of the strategy games have nearly the same idea of the gameplay. Even if you might not like the game, it still has a lot to give. What you might hate is the repetitiveness, only because there is not a lot of vehicles and troops to choose.
The gameplay of the game seems quite interesting and the actions happen just like in real life, with animations and special effects, giving a feel of the explosions, deaths, brake of the engines and other stuff. The whole idea is to defeat your enemy, but it really depends what game mode you will choose. There is a lot to choose from, since you have campaign and skirmish. I really liked the number of the stages you had to choose from in the skirmish and the enemy difficulty, simply put a lot of options to choose from. The campaign had other objectives, like going to a specified point in the map, destroying target vehicle, killing troops and other stuff. I really liked the first level where you had to maneuver a Tiger Tank. It felt really realistic and you could even upgrade its skills when you gather enough experience.
Optimization was good, but not really perfect. What I didn't really understand was why the screen wasn't fully shown and it seemed like a lower resolution than it is actually chosen. It might be a graphics problem, but since I have never seen such thing, I assume that it is the developers fault. The Tiger Tank during the first level, slowed movement when moving by a building's corners. This is really bad because I think it has to do with pixel detection, since the algorithm specified for the tank, does not clearly understand if it will collide with the building, or it will move on, making it really obvious for an optimization defect. Other stuff than that, I didn't notice anything wrong, but I assume that the problems I mentioned might be fixed or are not vital for playing the game.
The graphics used into the game are very good. Company of Heroes is one of the first games which applied DirectX 10, into the game and at that time was really nice to see, since not a lot of games had that privilege. The special effects, textures, the ground, grass, tanks, shootings, animations where very cool. I really liked the tank though, especially when it shoots, since in that moment you might think of getting rid of the enemies and passing on to the next objectives. The enemies fighting where also very intuitive, but during the game it might happen that you would want to do other stuff and forget about some of your troops. This is maybe the players skill, but there should be some advisers and other tips into the game which show in real-time so the player will know if he forgot about the units.
The story is during the World War II and I personally think that it is quite obvious. There is a lot to learn from the history and replacing it again into a game might give some good impressions from people who know about that period of time. Still this doesn't mean that it is all quite good, because there have been many killings and the players might feel like recreating the war again just because of the fun this game gave to them. There is a lot to learn though, so I would tell you that the game tried to replace the history in a virtual manner. You might hate it, or like it, but in the end it is your own choice.
The sound in the game was very good. All the real life attacks, explosions, tanks movements, enemy ballistas had all their own sounds. It feels really sweet and makes you fall in love if you love history, wars and strategy games. A lot of gamers still play this game and you can also play with your friends, since strategy games have those kind of pleasures. The game is quite interesting and you might learn even the troops, vehicles, buildings of that time.
Overall the game is quite good, but had some minor optimizations which had to be fixed since the start. It might be the resolution of the screen which is 1920x1080 (Full HD), but either way it doesn't completely hurt the final ratings of the game.
